John Tavener’s The Protecting Veil on preowned CD — performed by cellist Steven Isserlis, one of the defining recordings of this landmark contemporary classical work.

Written in 1987 and premiered at the BBC Proms, The Protecting Veil is a single-movement work for cello and strings inspired by the Orthodox feast of the Protection of the Mother of God. This Virgin Classics recording pairs it with Britten’s Third Suite for Cello, Op. 87, and Tavener’s own Thrinos. Pressed in Germany.
